About the Farmstead
The Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead has been a source of recreation in the southern Johnson County area since 1978. The farmstead was established in 1978, and was later dedicated in memory of Deanna Rose, an Overland Park police officer killed in 1985.
The farmstead is twelve acres of family fun and entertainment. Designed to depict a turn-of-the-century farm, the Farmstead includes a petting zoo, a silo with slides, a ‘tot-lot’ for the younger children, Kanza Indian Encampment, farmhouse, dairy barn, country schoolhouse, Ben’s Bank, Vic’s General Store, Alex and Emily’s Ice Cream Parlor, Pat’s Photo Parlor, John’s Blacksmith Shop, fishing pond, butterfly garden and picture-box gardens. Pony rides are available for children 3-10 years old.
A farm would not be complete without all the animals that live there. Every farm animal imaginable can be found throughout the area. Each spring, visitors come to enjoy being entertained by the newborn babies with their playful antics and eagerness to drink from bottles. Tatonka, , the Farmstead bison, is a popular attractions for children. The Farmstead houses three different birds of prey species including the golden eagle and red tailed hawk. Each year new arrivals join the petting zoo. Our mother “Fainting” goat continues to bless the Farmstead with her babies each year. Another activity is our bottle fed baby goats. You can feed the adorable baby goats a bottle of “kid” milk.
Three overhead domes have been installed at the Farmstead. These devices will provide audio descriptions of Farmstead attractions for those that are visually impaired.
Open daily, April 1 through October 31. One-hour tours are available for groups of 20-30 and include a horse drawn wagon ride and food for feeding the animals. Reservations are required for tours.
